CHANGES IN THE POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE ACROSS MEMBRANES AND ULTRASTRUCTURE OF GLADIOLUS FLOWERS PRESERVED IN WATER AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

Abstract:
A change of the transmembranal potential difference in gladiolus cut flowers (schneeprinzess cultivar) preserved in water at room temperature was observed. The highest values of the potential difference were recorded in open flowers and in buds ready to open. The potential difference had negative values in tight buds and positive values in senescent flowers.

Ultrastructure research proved the absence of plasmodesma, alteration of the nucleus and cytoplasmic structure, electro dense formations concentrated in the cytoplasm, and tonoplast and plasmalemma broken up in senescent flowers. The variation of the transmembranal potential difference is due to the activity of an ion pump that effects a difference in transmembranal ionic concentration.

The polarization that occurs in senescent flowers is due to the tearing up of tonoplast and plasmalemma, entailing the disappearance of compartmentation in ionic concentration.
