ISHS Acta Horticulturae 260: International Symposium on Growth and Yield Control in Vegetable Production

TESTING A STRATEGY OF GROWTH AND YIELD CONTROL IN GREENHOUSE CUCUMBERS IN A SPECIALIZED VEGETABLE-GROWING FARM

Abstract:
In 1988, in collaboration with the Institute of Vegetable Production Grossbeeren of the AAS of the GDR and the Ilmenau College of Technology, Department of Technical and Biomedical Cybernetics, the cooperative farm (LPG) Frühgemüsezentrum "Wilhelm Wolff" developed a strategy for the optimization of air temperatures in greenhouse cucumbers based on a yield formation model.

The optimal temperature is calculated for a fixed CO2 concentration of 800 ppm without ventilation and for a concentration of 500 ppm when the greenhouse is ventilated. Optimal temperatures are fixed for periods of nine days so as to take into account actual temperature and yield curves.

The tests were carried out in a steel-framed glass house built in 1984 with a cultivatable surface of 424 m2. The cucumbers (variety 'Saladin') were planted on 10th February 1988, the test was completed in September.

The 9-d mean temperature (24-hour means) was between 17 and 24 °C. In the period without ventilation the 9-d mean CO2 concentration during the day was between 600 and 900 ppm, in the period with ventilation between 400 and 700 ppm.
