Abstract:
Since substrate culture and NFT have made their entry into horticulture, a lot has changed in this agricultural subsector, mainly in the field of professional skill and investment policy like infrastructure, nutrient supply, computer equipment and an integrated culture technical mastering.
When changing from soil culture over substrate to hydroculture, elimination of dangerous plant pathogens, which lead e.g. to soil sickness with the traditional cultivation methods, was hoped for.
Unfortunately, changing the root medium not only leads to altering the - by man wanted - macro flora development but also to an alternation of the by nature dictated - and not necessarily by man liked - micro and meso fauna and flora in the rhizosphere and on the hydroplant (Van Assche, 1987).
So far, about 20% of the Belgian glasshouse vegetable cultures have changed to cultures in which the usual soil is not used : there are indeed 300 ha of rockwool cultures and 50 ha of NFT (Benoit et al., 1986).
