ISHS Acta Horticulturae 26: III Symposium on Peat in Horticulture

THE EFFECT OF NITROGEN CONCENTRATION AND AMOUNT OF LIQUID FEED ON TOMATOES GROWN IN PEAT SUBSTRATES

Author:   M.J. Maher
Abstract:
It has been shown that peat is a suitable growing medium for tomato production (1, 2, 3). Peat is a light almost sterile medium with many physical and chemical properties which make it a suitable growing medium. Fertiliser rates for tomato production in peat have been discussed by several workers (2, 4, 5, 6), but mainly only in relation to base dressing. Woods (2) has given a base fertiliser mix and a modification of this mix was used in this study.

In addition to a base dressing a tomato crop must be fed regularly throughout the season with balanced applications of nitrogen and potassium to maintain satisfactory growth and vigour. The object of this study is to provide information on the post-planting nutrition of the tomato in a 100 per cent peat substrate.

The effects of nutrition on the yield, size, colour and chemical composition of the fruit were investigated.
