ISHS Acta Horticulturae 26: III Symposium on Peat in Horticulture

STUDIES ON FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM IN PEAT SOILS

Author:   A.N. Glynn
Abstract:
Peat, because of its unique physical and chemical properties is becoming an increasingly important medium for crop production in Ireland. Sphagnum peat is used extensively for glasshouse crops while reclaimed cut-over woody fen peat is of potential importance for vegetable crop production outdoors. The freedom from pathogenic microorganisms is an outstanding advantage of newly reclaimed peatland but on the other hand the introduction of plant pathogens might have serious consequences during cropping if the microbiological activity in the peat remained low (Dooley, 1968).
