SHADE FACTORS OF A RANGE OF SHADECLOTH MATERIALS

Author:   D.J. Yates
Abstract:
Several factors influence the shading produced by shadecloth materials. These include the angle at which the incoming radiation strikes the shadecloth, the spectral composition of the incident radiation, the type of construction of the shadecloth and its horizontal orientation. The true shade factor of a given shadecloth may be different from the nominal shade factor for that cloth depending on the above factors.

This paper presents results of the investigation of the importance of these factors for thirteen shadecloths available in Australia. For most samples studied, the shade factor increased with more oblique radiation but for woven samples with high shade factors, the shade factor was less at more oblique angles of incidence of radiation that it was at normal incidence. The transmission spectra of green shadecloths is briefly discussed in relation to the purposes for they may be used.
