ISHS Acta Horticulturae 257: Energy Conservation and Solar Energy Utilization in Horticultural Engineering

INTRODUCTION OF IMAG-RESEARCH WORK IN THE FIELD OF GREENHOUSE ENERGY ENGINEERING AND PRODUCTION CONTROL

Author:   J.J. Laurs
Abstract:
The Institute of Agricultural Engineering (IMAG) was founded in 1974 when three existing research establishments merged: The Institute of Agricultural Engineering, The Institute of Agricultural Buildings and the Institute of Horticultural Engineering. IMAG is a foundation, belonging to a network of 24 research institutes and 11 research stations, supervised by the Division for Agricultural Research of the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

IMAG carries out applied research in the field of mechanisation and automation, labour and work management, buildings and greenhouses, energy consumption, environmental and climate control, to promote and improve the agricultural development in general and the production in the Netherlands in particular.

IMAG has a staff of about 220 people, including 60 with a scientific degree and 50 with a bachelor's degree in education. The efforts in the field of horticultural engineering take 40% of the total budget.

This introduction of IMAG-research work will give a global idea of the work that is being carried out the following subjects:

  1. Greenhouse construction, cladding materials and thermal screens.
  2. Greenhouse energy engineering and climate control.
  3. Computerized control of greenhouse unit operations.
  4. Computer modelling of the mass and energy transport in greenhouses.

The references will lead to more details and scientific substance.
