ISHS Acta Horticulturae 256: V International Symposium on Pear Growing

CORRELATIONS BETWEEN TIME OF PICKING, ETHYLENE PRODUCTION AND OTHER RIPENING INDICES AT HARVESTING IN "ABATE" AND "PACKHAM'S T." PEARS

Authors:   A. Rizzolo, P. Eccher Zerbini, F. Gorini
Abstract:
"Abate" and "Packham's Triumph" pears were picked from orchards of two sites at successive dates. For each sample, soluble solids, acidity, starch index, firmness and color were measured, while a part of the fruit was put into sealed jars to detect the beginning of the climacteric.

A relation between harvest date and ethylene developed in jars was found only in two cases out of four and there was no correlation between ethylene and the other measured parameters.

Therefore the method for assessing maturity based on ethylene production is not necessarily superior to other methods in determining the optimal picking date for a good storage.
