METHYL BROMIDE STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM

Author:   C.M. Blondeau
Abstract:
Methyl bromide is a potentially hazardous product for a number of reasons :
  • because of its physical and chemical properties,
  • because it is transported, in bulk and in small containers, all over the world,
  • because it is handled by a large number of relatively technically untrained people.

Consequently Ethyl Corporation desires to share with its customers the knowledge accumulated in its years of safe industrial production and offer the support of its technical staff. Through its stewardship program, Ethyl Corporation aims to anticipate and minimize the hazards related to methyl bromide. The program is composed of :

  • frequent contacts with all customers to establish their specific needs and provide a good working relationship,
  • training programs for Ethyl's customers' employees and for their downstream customers,
  • visits to customers to review together the design of their handling facilities and safety equipment,
  • cooperation with regulatory agencies, as required, to disseminate safety information to end-users,
  • review of the transportation equipment and network to minimize the risk of accidents.

The results of this program have been encouraging. For example :

  • we see improvements in our customers' handling procedures and choice of safety equipment,
  • we see a greater concern for safety and better preparedness for emergencies.

We think that each person who handles methyl bromide needs to be aware that safe handling of the product affects the entire industry. We encourage all persons who handle methyl bromide to develop their own stewardship program and, if necessary, to demand help from their suppliers in doing so.
