EFFECT OF SOLARIZATION AND FUMIGANTS ON SOIL BORNE PATHOGENS OF PEPPER IN GREENHOUSE

Authors:   G. Cartia, T. Cipriano, N. Greco
Abstract:
Effectiveness of methyl bromide (60 g/m2), dichloropropane-dichloropropene (40 ml/m2) and soil solarization in various time spans and tarping types alone or in combination with a low dose of methyl bromide (30 g/m2) in controlling soil borne pathogens on pepper: corky root, a stem basal necrosis and the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica was examined in glasshouse experiments.

Observations were made on plant growth, yield, fruit weight and presence of diseased plants. Results showed that soil solarization increased plant growth and yield similarly to fumigants. Treatments controlled, to some extent the above mentioned soil borne agents; only in untreated plots, infection symptoms and root-knot nematodes on pepper were observed.
