Abstract:
Isozyme analysis was investigated for use as a biological marker for identifying Prunus species and F1 hybrids.
Proteins were extracted from leaf samples of 12 different Prunus species (including peach and almond) and 5 F1 hybrids.
Liquid nitrogen and Polytron grinding techniques were compared and no variations were noted in isozyme activity among individual samples of species and F1 hybrids.
Isozyme profiles of 22 enzyme stains generated by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis were evaluated for their effectiveness in discerning species and F1 hybrids.
Of the enzyme stains investigated, 10 were helpful in species identification, and 6 were useful in identifying F1 hybrids.
