PENETRATION OF MONILIA LAXA AND RHIZOPUS STOLONIFER THROUGH NECTARINE FRUIT EPIDERMIS

Authors:   C. NGUYEN-THE, C. HUGUENEY, A. CHAMEL, M. ARNOUX
Abstract:
Scanning electron microscopy of nectarine contaminated with aqueous suspension of conidia of M. laxa or spores of R. stolonifer was performed. Conidia of M. laxa vigorously germinated, whereas spores of R. stolonifer remained dormant since they lack available nutrients on the fruit surface. Neither direct penetration, nor lenticel penetration could be noticed. Penetration of mycelium was solely observed through microcracks. An enzymic degradation of nectarine epidermis by M. laxa and R. stolonifer was demonstrated, but this was not likely to involve a breakdown of cuticle by fungal cutinase.
