PEACH BLOOM DELAY USING FALL APPLICATIONS OF ETHREL AND PRO-GIBB

Author:   K.M. Williams
Abstract:
Fall foliar and bud applications of Pro-Gibb (gibberellin A3) and Ethrel (ethephon (2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid) were tested for bloom delay and flower bud thinning on bearing peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch cv. Winblo) and nectarine (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch cv. Redgold) trees. Mid-October applications of Pro-Gibb at 50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm delayed bloom 2 to 5 days, depending on rate. Mid-November applications of Pro-Gibb provided no significant bloom delay. Combinations of Ethrel (50 or 100 ppm) and Pro-Gibb (100 or 200 ppm) applied mid-October demonstrated 7 to 13 days delay, depending on spring weather conditions. Mid-November applications of Pro-Gibb and Ethrel had reduced bloom delay. Flower bud mortality occurred with 100 ppm Ethrel applied in mid-October; mid-November applications of Ethrel had little effect on bud death. Mid-October applications of Pro-Gibb enhanced flower bud retention.
