Abstract:
In pea, seed development (at a definite node) is occuring around 40 days; this stage corresponds to half time life of the plant.
Three peculiar steps, clearly delimited by seed moisture content and its dry weight, can be described.
During filling, cotyledons and embryonic axis are subjected to a physiological desiccation while testa stays greatly hydrated since physiological maturity.
Fresh seeds, handly harvested, are slowly able to germinate under water ; at physiological maturity, all seeds germinate.
When germination is possible, seedling growth is very slow ; it becomes correct when seed moiture content attains 20–18% Artificial drying of immature seeds lead them to germinate Comparison of these results with those obtained in other species shows that pea seed behaviour is typical .
