THE EFFECT OF MOTHER PLANT NUTRITION ON SEED YIELD AND SEED VIGOUR IN PEA (PISUM SATIVUM L.) CULTIVAR 'SPRITE' |

| Abstract:
The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus mineral nutrition of the mother plant on seed yield and seed vigour as determined by the seed leachate conductivity and cold test germination percentage on pea (Pisum sativum L.) were studied. In this experiment, the early maturing cultivar 'Sprite' was grown under glass in pots containing the GCRI compost mixture. The treatments consisted of two levels of nitrogen (100 and 1000 mg per plant) and four levels of phosphorus (25, 250, 500 and 1000 mg per plant). Seed dry weight, seed leachate conductivity and cold test percentage germination were determined for all the treatments after harvest. Increasing the nitrogen nutrition supply increased seed dry weight. However, an increase in seed yield and seed vigour was only achieved by the interaction of high nitrogen (1000 mg per plant) with medium phosphorus supply (500 mg per plant). | |
