ISHS Acta Horticulturae 253: IV International Symposium on Seed Research in Horticulture

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF GLOBE-ARTICHOKE (CYNARA SCOLYMUS L.) SEEDS

Author:   C. Foury
Abstract:
Advantages of globe-artichoke cultivars propagated by seeds has been proved. The quality of seeds is primordial to reach this purpose ; but the drastic change of propagation pattern from vegetative to sexual, probably puts some unexpected problems. The range of favourable temperatures to germinate is wide (3–4 to 35–39°C). The cultivated strains, contrary to some wild species, present neither photoperiodic sensibility nor dormancy. The main difficulties of seed production lies in fecundation and embryogenesis.
