PRODUCTIVE MUTATIONS INDUCED IN CAPSICUM ANNUUM BY PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL MUTAGENS

Authors:   Y.R. Bhargava, G.V. Umalkar
Abstract:
Creating genetic variations has become increasingly important as crop genetic resources are becoming more difficult to be obtained via. plant exploration and other programme(s). Hence, the present investigations were taken up to study the phenotypic as well as genotypic alterations induced through the application of physical and chemical mutagen(s) in Capsicum annuum Linn. variety Ankur-1. A wide array of induced pericarp colour mutations in the berries of the commercially grown hot pepper was obtained with different concentrations of gamma radiations, ethyl methane sulfonate and sodium azide treatment(s). A complete stabilisation of the induced changes was achieved through the selection of eliminations in subsequent generations. These characteristics induced holds promise for further exploitation in plant breeding programme(s).
