BREEDING OF RUNNER BEAN FOR SEED GERMINATION AT LOW TEMPERATURE (*)

Abstract:
The work is concerned with bean cultivars for grain production of Phaseolus vulgarist L. and P. coccineus L. The first point was to seek for a valid method of evaluation of the ability of various genotypes to germinate at low temperature. It was observed that the water absorption of the seeds varied according to the genotype. After soaking, the weight of the seeds increased of 100–130%. Increasing temperature soaking was frequently hastened whereas the amount of soaked water was reduced. Germination tests and embryoculture were carried out to state the seed germination ability at low temperature: germination tests showed a poor reliability because of high effect of environmental factors. The embryoculture made it possible to standardize the conditions of the trials. Field trials carried out in mountain areas confirmed the data of embryoculture. The best germination ability at low temperature was found in the cultivar 'VL0002'. Through a backcross breeding programme the character is in course of introduction in 'VL0006', the Piedmontese most important runner bean cultivar. Another way to introduce the character is the interspecific hybridization between P. vulgaris and P. ritensis.
