RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STANDARD GERMINATION TEST, CONDUCTIVITY TEST AND FIELD EMERGENCE OF PEA SEEDS

Author:   F. LADONNE
Abstract:
Ten pea seed lots (Pisum sativum L.) were studied for field emergence under different agroclimatic conditions and comparatively in the laboratory by standard germination and conductivity tests.

In the field trials, differences in seed quality manifested themeselves by differences in field emergence but also by an interaction between seed lots and seeding conditions.

Significant correlations were found between standards germination and field emergence wich were all the better as the seeding conditions were more favorable. However, standard germination values can't be directly used to predict field emergence. Significant correlations were also found between conductivity test and field emergence. They are greater than those observed for standard germination only in unfavourable conditions.

These results suggest that conductivity test may be useful to predict field performance of pea seed lots under suboptimal conditions.
