USE OF SOFT X-RAY TECHNIQUE TO DETECT HAPLOID EMBRYOS IN IMMATURE SEEDS OF MELON

Authors:   A. SAUTON, C. OLIVIER, A. CHAVAGNAT
Abstract:
The X-ray radiography technique is applied on immature seeds of melon obtained after pollination with irradiated pollen in order to detect haploid embryos.

It gives a good image of the internal structure of seeds at least 4 weeks old and adequately dried. It enables us to visualize embryos from the globular stage and does not seem to affect their germination.

Its use in the process of melon haploid obtention should noticeably decrease the production costs.
