CRYOGENIC STORAGE OF SOME HORTICULTURAL SPECIES

Abstract:
Many species of horticultural seeds such as vegetables, ornamentals and fruits have been successfully cryopreserved as germplasm. In this study, mungbean (Vigna radiata), Veitchia palm (Veitchia merrillii), Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana), papaya (Carica papaya) and wild banana (Musa violascens) embryos and seeds were dried to below 10 percent moisture content and subsequently stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C. They remained viable after storage. For large seeded species that is palms, the excised embryos were preferred for cryopreservation. Cryogenic storage maintains seed viability but the rate of germination and seedling growth rate was much slower after cryopreservation.
