ISHS Acta Horticulturae 252: I International Symposium on the Development of New Floricultural Crops

BREEDING AND CULTURE OF POLYPLOID SPARAXIS HYBRIDS

Authors:   W. Horn, M. Wehrenfennig, H. Bundies
Abstract:
Sparaxis (Ixioideae, Iridaceae) has the potential to become a new Freesia-like cut flower crop. Results of breeding work on the diploid, triploid and tetraploid level are reported. Existing natural hybrids and wild species were intercrossed and selected in later generations for horticultural quality and fertility. Promising results have been obtained.

Culture of Sparaxis from corms takes place in a greenhouse in winter and spring, at temperatures of 12–15°C. Corms can be stored at 2°C or 25°C. Since the asexual propagation rate is low and plants are threatened by virus disease, in vitro-techniques have been developed for micro-propagation and pathogen elimination.
