EFFECT OF PHOTOPERIOD AND TEMPERATURE ON THE GROWTH AND FLOWER PRODUCTION OF HELICONIA PSITTACORUM 'TAY'.

Abstract:
Heliconia psittacorum shows a great potential as a commercial cut flower crop. In 1986 an experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of photoperiod (8, 12 or 16 h) and temperature (15, 18 or 21°C) on the growth and flowering of H. psittacorum 'Tay'.

By increasing the minimum air temperature from 15 to 21°C the number of shoots emerging as well as the number of flowering stems produced per square meter were more than doubled. Also, stem length was increased and the quality was noticeably improved.

Photoperiod only had a slight effect on growth and flowering. Subjecting plants to a photoperiod of 12 h increased the number of flowering stems as compared to 16 h.
