ISHS Acta Horticulturae 25: II Meeting on Horticultural Economics

ANALYSIS OF THE LOCATION OF HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTION

Author:   S. Tarditi
Abstract:
Agricultural production in Italy is becoming increasingly oriented towards the market, stimulated by profound structural changes, mainly connected with the process of economic development which affects the whole country, and encouraged partly by government action designed to improve the productivity and income of agricultural workers.

Government intervention, so far kept within certain limits of generality at national and community level, and acting mainly on product and factor prices, is destined to become much more effective on the productive structure of agriculture in forthcoming years, favoured in this direction by the recent decentralization at regional level of a great part of the decisions regarding economic policy.

It therefore becomes necessary to know what are the evolutionary trends of the geographic distribution of the various agricultural crops, in order to be able to analyse more thoroughly the factors which in the past have influenced the location of productive activities, and to be able to use this knowledge for the purpose of future planning.
