PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN VEGETABLE DRUGS - RELEVANCE FOR THE HEALTH PROTECTION OF PATIENTS

Authors:   D. Ennet, T. Gabrio
Abstract:
Selected results of testing herbs for pesticide residues were checked for their relevance from the aspect of patients health protection who take phytodrugs and teas, respectively. Samples from medicinal plant cultivation, the collection of wild medicinal plants and stock protection were tested. In case of inadequate application of pesticides or of non-observance of waiting periods, in our model investigations high levels of residue quantities result, exceeding the maximum permissible residue quantities. When estimating the toxicological relevance of pesticide residues, we start from the consideration that, for pesticide residues in vegetable drugs according to their consumption only about 1 % of the total daily permissible pesticide quantity can be accepted, which ist mainly due to foodstuffs and drinking water. Herbs and phytodrugs tested in our investigations do not contain any quantities of pesticide residues representing an acute hazard to the patient. The principles of evaluating residues presented allow to make realistic quality demands for herbs.
