ISHS Acta Horticulturae 248: International Symposium on Models for Plant Growth, Environmental Control and Farm Management in Protected Cultivation

A MODEL FOR TESTING THE SUITABILITY OF TOMATO HYBRIDS FOR CULTIVATION IN DEFICIENT NATURAL LIGHT

Author:   V. Voican
Abstract:
This model is aimed at testing new tomato hybrids for glasshouse cultivation in the winter months, when natural lighting is lower in duration and intensity. To this end, young tomato plants are grown for variable periods of time in lighting conditions characteristics of the winter months (3 klx; 9 h) and at lower temperatures (18°C by day; 12°C at night), being afterwards transferred into natural light, where they are kept until fructification. The differences in growth and development are used to determine the degree of hybrid suitability for cultivation in insufficient light.
