Abstract:
The effect of sowing date on the maturity characteristics of four cultivars of broccoli was studied.
The heat unit concept was applied to relate temperature differences over the different sowing dates to time to curd initiation, curd maturity and rate of curd growth.
The time to curd initiation appeared to be dependent on a heat unit summation above a base temperature of 1C while the rate of curd growth was related best to a heat unit summation above 3C. The morphological age of the plant (no. of leaves) did not vary with sowing dates but varied with cultivars and appeared to be related to their varying time to curd initiation.
Curd and total dry weight production varied with sowing dates and with cultivars.
