PESTICIDE USE AND RESIDUE MONITORING IN FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES |

| Abstract:
A survey of vegetable growers in the Sydney Region showed a general lack of understanding of effective pesticide use. Whilst there were no indications of deliberate widespread pesticide misuse it was necessary to confirm that the fresh fruit and vegetables available to the public were free of excessive pesticide residues. In October 1987 a monitoring program was initiated to sample both local and interstate produce on a weekly basis at the Flemington Markets, Sydney and roadside stalls. The study concluded in May 1988 during which time 409 samples comprising 27 fruit and vegetable varieties were obtained. Analysis for organochlorine, pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticide residues showed none of the samples exceeded the legal limit. Fungicide and carbaryl analysis is still underway but the samples done to date are free of excessive residues. | |
