POSTHARVEST FILM WRAPPING AND PATHOGEN CONTROL FOR MELONS

Authors:   D.C. Joyce, N.D. Delroy, H.V. Gratte, M.G. Webb
Abstract:
Experiments aimed at maintaining the quality of melons with film wraps were carried out in Western Australia. Fungicides were also evaluated to determine treatments appropriate for use in conjunction with film wraps. Netted melons lost more water than non-netted varieties. Consequently, netted melons benefited more from film wrapping. Perforated, cling- and shrink-wrap films were compared. Both the cling- and shrink-wraps markedly reduced water loss. Shrink wrap experiments with Planters Jumbo rockmelon showed that potential benefits include reduced water loss, little or no surface discoloration, and reduced mesocarp softening. The better appearance of film wrapped fruit was more apparent after a shelf period. Decay was a problem with both wrapped and unwrapped fruit. Prochloraz or benomyl in combination with guazatine were the most effective treatments against the pathogens infecting the melons used in these experiments.
