A CONSUMER EVALUATION OF NEW MELON TYPES

Authors:   R.J. Clarke, S. Stevens
Abstract:
A survey of Victorian consumers was undertaken in 1985 to determine frequency of purchase, size preference and criteria used for selecting the following types of melons - canteloup or rockmelon (Cucumis melo var. reticulatus), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and honeydew (Cucumis melo var. inodorus). Respondents were also asked to taste three varieties of Asian melons: Japanese muskmelon (Cucumis melo var. reticulatus), honeydew and hami (Cucumis melo var. reticulatus). The survey found that most consumers liked the melons, particularly Japanese muskmelon and honeydew with the Japanese muskmelon the preferred melon.
