PHENOLOGY STUDIES AND THE PREDICTION OF HARVEST DATES OF BROCCOLI IN THE LOCKYER VALLEY.

Authors:   D.C. Fyffe, M.E. Titley
Abstract:
Phenology studies were undertaken with four cultivars of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck) sown from 20 March to 4 June 1986 in the Lockyer Valley. Growth stages were identified and then correlated with metereological data to determine the most suitable schedule. The most accurate modified heat sums differed in their cut off temperature between cultivars and between growth stages within cultivars.

The study demonstrated a usable technique for the rapid determination of the developmental stage of the broccoli apex. Cultivars exhibited significant differences in their phenological development with respect to temperature and their sowing time.

Results from 1986 sowings demonstrated that estimates of days were generally more accurate than heat unit estimates.
