ISHS Acta Horticulturae 247: Research and Development Conference on Vegetables, the Market and the Producer

MARKETING AND PRODUCTION OF YELLOW AND WHITE FLESHED POTATOES FOR ASIAN AND AUSTRALIAN MARKETS

Authors:   C.M.J. Williams, T. Deer
Abstract:
There is a potential opportunity for Australia to supply yellow fleshed potatoes to Asian markets. Periods of potential market shortfall in Singapore and Hong Kong were identified. Potential also exists to develop yellow fleshed potatoes as a new product for Australian markets and white fleshed potatoes for Asian markets.

New yellow fleshed potato cultivars Desiree (yields of 40 to 84 t/ha) and Patrones (40 to 71 t/ha) were successfully produced in South Australia and have potential for yellow fleshed markets. The medium size grades (80 to 250 gram tubers) of both cultivars were assessed as suitable by importers involved in a survey of Singapore and Hong Kong markets. In general the importers preferred potatoes of yellow flesh, mature skin, brushed, free of blemishes and of grade size 80 to 250 grams (compared to 30 to 100 gram). Packages preferred were hessian bags or cartons of 20 or 25 kg capacity.
