CUCURBIT EXPANSION MARKETING FROM THE BURDEKIN

Authors:   A. Mead, B. Dowdle
Abstract:
A wide range of cucurbits is produced in the Burdekin River Irrigation Area during the warm and dry autumn, winter and spring seasons: rockmelons, zucchini, squashes, cucumbers, watermelons and pumpkins. There is an excellent "out of season" marketing opportunity for both the domestic and export market, but the export market is under-utilised at present. Current production is large scale. Current marketing involves either single grower units or bulk buying for the export market. It is hoped that strategic market planning in the future will result in fixed price contracts, direct marketing, central packaging and co-operative marketing, single brand names, quality assurance, and increased export opportunities.
