FIELD PROTECTION OF CAULIFLOWER CURDS TO PRESERVE WHITENESS AND IMPROVE POSTHARVEST QUALITY

Authors:   J.J. Forbes, K.S.R. Chapman
Abstract:
Discolouration of cauliflower curds due to poor leaf protection in some cultivars reduces quality. Five methods of field protection were examined with the cultivars White Rock and Elby. Tying leaves together over the curd with an elastic band was the best method. Breaking a leaf over a curd or covering the curd with the permeable polyethylene material Tyvek also improved quality. The cost of each method could be recovered by higher cutout, improved quality and by delaying harvest to achieve heavier curds.
