ISHS Acta Horticulturae 247: Research and Development Conference on Vegetables, the Market and the Producer

QUALITY OUTURN ON THE MARKET FLOOR IN RELATION TO DOMESTIC & EXPORT STANDARDS & SUCCESSFUL MARKETING.

Author:   C.A. Cope
Abstract:
1987 saw the introduction of Commonwealth Export Control Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Orders for minimum export quality standards. It is anticipated that these will be incorporated by all States providing a nationwide uniform set of standards encompassing all vegetables. The standards are in the form of Schedules and include written interpretation, product requirements for Extra Class, Class 1 and Class 2, presentation and packing, trade description, post harvest treatments, storage, transport and other requirements. They will also incorporate visual interpretation. The basic principals of these standards are currently being used by industry leaders whom include iced broccoli, sprouts, chilled carrots, Chinese cabbage, celery, asparagus, & tomato producers.

Producers of consistent, high quality produce are eagerly sought after by both exporters and domestic buyers because of the extended shelf life, high % of outurn and positive consumer acceptance.
