ISHS Acta Horticulturae 247: Research and Development Conference on Vegetables, the Market and the Producer

PRODUCTION AND SCHEDULING OF LETTUCE TRANSPLANTS FOR COMMERCIAL CROP PRODUCTION

Author:   D.O. Cliffe
Abstract:
Demands for the fresh vegetable market and processors for continuity of supply of fresh head lettuce during winter months, has led to the development of techniques in crop scheduling not before approached. Large scale plantings incorporating the use of cell transplants, varietal selection and specialised crop agronomy, were carried out in the Macquarie Valley during 1986 and 1987.

Results indicate that economic returns and continuity of supply of fresh head lettuce for shredding, are possible only when strict adherance to thes principles is applied.
