ISHS Acta Horticulturae 247: Research and Development Conference on Vegetables, the Market and the Producer

THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXPORT POTATO INDUSTRY

Authors:   N.D. Delroy, H.V. Gratte, J. Gallagher
Abstract:
Market research in 1985 indicated potential for Western Australia (W.A.) to develop an export market for premium quality potatoes to South East Asia. The research indicated a commercially viable industry could be established by taking advantage of our geographical proximity, supplying a premium quality product with the characteristics demanded by the consumers and targeting the quality conscious rather than the price conscious markets.

The research and development programme subsequently initiated has been a market driven programme involving a total package approach with involvement at all levels from production through to marketing. The programme has incorporated a number of aspects including: (i) varietal screening, (ii) management experiments examining the effect of nitrogen rates and plant spacing on tuber yield and quality, (iii) monitoring postharvest handling operations and shipping conditions, (iv) market research including test shipments and (v) the formation of an industry group with the aim of commercial production for export.
