Abstract:
Recent withdrawal of some miticides and high levels of resistance to others have placed Australian growers in a difficult situation with regard to control of spider mite, a major pest of many crops.
In response to this crisis, Hawkesbury Agricultural College has developed a pest management service in collaboration with N.S.W. Dept. of Agriculture which concentrates on integrated control of spider mites.
The service utilises the predatory mite P. persimilis, and incorporates farm visits and laboratory monitoring of leaf samples.
Experience to date has demonstrated its potential in a range of crops, including vegetables grown in protective structures.
