ISHS Acta Horticulturae 247: Research and Development Conference on Vegetables, the Market and the Producer

THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INSECTICIDE RESISTANCE STRATEGY FOR THE LOCKYER VALLEY, QUEENSLAND

Author:   P.L. Deuter
Abstract:
Resistance to pyrethroids used to control Cabbage Moth (Plutella xylostella) has been shown to exist in the Lockyer Valley, an important vegetable growing district in South-East Queensland.

An Insecticide Management Strategy is being developed by concerned people in the Lockyer Valley in an attempt to reduce this level of resistance. Farmers have had this Strategy explained to them, and the majority have given a committment to following it for 12 months. These farmers represent 80% of all producers who grow brassica crops in the Lockyer Valley.

The Strategy involves a system of rotation by exclusion, by excluding each of the four major groups of insecticides for one month, three times over a 12 month period.

A review of the Strategy and the levels of adoption will occur in July/August 1989.
