EFFECT OF IRRIGATION AND NITROGEN ON YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATOES GROWN IN SEMI-ARID SOUTH WESTERN N.S.W.

Author:   B.J. Logan
Abstract:
Field trials were carried out on the potato cultivars Sebago, Atlantic and Crystal on a sandy soil in south western N.S.W. The crop was grown with three irrigation frequency treatments and three nitrogen rates. Measurement was made of plant and tuber development, harvest yield and quality for fresh market and crisp processing. Higher irrigation frequencies resulted in higher yield of tubers and dry matter yield. Increased nitrogen rate resulted in increased leaf growth, tuber yield, dry matter yield, reduced dry matter content and improved the quality of cooked tubers. There was no significant difference in yield between the three cultivars. Atlantic produced tubers with the highest dry matter content and lowest reducing sugar content. Culinary cooking quality was higher with less frequent irrigation and higher nitrogen rates. The cultivars Sebago and Atlantic were more suitable than Crystal for boiling and mashing while Crystal was the most suitable for baking. Crystal was found to be susceptible to hollow heart and brown fleck.
