Abstract:
The effects of transplanting a range of plants/module and modules/m2 combinations on time to maturity, bulb yield, size grade distribution and bulb shape were studied in 1987–88 at Forthside Vegetable Research Station.
These transplanted treatments were also compared with direct-drilled treatments.
The highest total bulb yields (83–88 t/ha) were obtained from transplanting 25–50 modules/m2 with 2–5 plants/module (100–125 plants/m2). Direct-drilled treatments yield 74 t/ha.
Direct-drilled on 30 June and transplanting on 1 September both matured in mid January.
Direct-drilling on 1 September matured 2–3 weeks later (early February).
