TESTING SUITABILITY OF ONION CULTIVARS FOR DEHYDRATION

Authors:   I.S. Rogers, R.D. Henderson
Abstract:
In South Australian experiments the cultivars Southport White Globe, Hysol and F1 Dehydrator No. 8 were in one trial of adequate size (>106 g mean weight) and were sufficiently high in soluble solids (>15%) to meet commercial requirements (P< 0.05). Parent bulbs with high solids produced progeny with higher solids than parents with low solids. Total solids (X) were related to soluble solids (Y) (Y = 0.841 x + 0.756, P< 0.001).

The extensive and prolific root system of Southport White Globe and Hysol were more tolerant of pink root Pyrenochaeta terrestris than the weak root systems of cultivars Creamgold and Early Creamgold which are grown for fresh market.
