BURDEKIN BEAN SEED QUARANTINE AND PRODUCTION AREA |

| Abstract:
The Burdekin River Irrigation Area (BRIA) is situated in the Dry Tropical region of North Queensland. The cool dry climate during winter is ideal for the production of bean seed as well as domestic and export culinary beans. Strict quarantine and inspection regulations ensure that bean seed crops are free from the seed borne diseases: Halo blight (Pseudomonas syringae, p.v. phaseolicola), Common bacterial blight (Xanthomonas campestris, p.v. phaseoli), Bacterial brown spot (Pseudomonas syringae p.v. syringae), and Anthracnose (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum), and allow a minimum infection of bean mosaic virus. Crop yields of 2.2 t/ha are attainable using production practices of furrow irrigation, bed planting, pre-plant herbicides, insecticides and modern windrowing and harvesting equipment.
