MARKETING ASPECTS OF HEAVY VEGETABLE RESEARCH IN QUEENSLAND |

| Abstract:
Potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and garlic are included in heavy vegetable research in Queensland. Selection of new potato cultivars for S.E. Queensland is aimed at dual purpose varieties; varieties that satisfy the ware and crisping markets. In North Queensland the emphasis is on ware varieties including yellow fleshed types for potential export markets in S.E. Asia. Orange and white fleshed sweet potatoes are being evaluated over a range of environments to select varieties with improved shape, and colour and texture of skin and flesh. Improved storage life, shape, firmness and skin colour are major selection criteria within existing germplasm for the development of new onion strains. Clove size has been a primary concern in the selection of an improved garlic strain. This has resulted in the release in 1988 of the large cloved variety Glenlarge. Various cultural techniques are being used to evaluate a range of small pumpkins (Cucurbita maxima) and grammas (C. moschata) to reduce the incidence of detractive skin diseases. In the large pumpkin range, emphasis is on the selection of reduced ribbing within the Jarrahdale variety. | |
