PROCESSING TOMATO CULTIVAR EVALUATION IN NORTHERN VICTORIA

Authors:   W.J. Ashcroft, S. Gurban
Abstract:
The yield and soluble solids production by a total of 16 processing tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) was assessed over two seasons in Northern Victoria under a range of soil-types and management conditions. Most cultivars were more productive in terms of ripe fruit yield and/or soluble solids concentration than UC82B, the industry standard. Ferry Morse 785 and Heinz 5001 were particularly promising with respect to both yield and soluble solids. Mean yield and soluble solids were higher for hybrid than for open pollenated cultivars in both growing seasons. Soluble solids were less under trickle irrigation on poorly structured soils, than under furrow on well structured soils, although yields were similar.
