ISHS Acta Horticulturae 247: Research and Development Conference on Vegetables, the Market and the Producer

VARIETAL EVALUATION OF VEGETABLES TO SUIT THE MARKET DEMAND IN FIJI

Authors:   B. Datt, M. Iqbal
Abstract:
Vegetable varieties are not bred but selected from those bred in other parts of the world. A number of various vegetables are tested against local checks. Aspects such as taste, size, shape, colour, resistance to disease and pests and yield are looked at before releasing a variety as well as consumer preference and the type of market demand. Selected varieties/lines are grown in replicated yield trials for a number of years and then grown all over Fiji as observational trials on farmers plots.

Sigatoka Research Station has already released several vegetable varieties according to various market demand viz. hotel industry, processing, local and export markets.
