SCHEDULING SWEETCORN IN A SUBTROPICAL ENVIRONMENT

Authors:   J.C. Margetts, M.E. Titley
Abstract:
Prediction of time from planting to tasselling can be based on the simple heat sum method. Similarly, time from planting to harvest and tasselling to harvest can be determined by use of modified heat sums using derived base temperatures. These base temperatures, calculated from intercept methods, are significantly lower for the planting to harvest period in comparison with the tasselling to harvest period. Estimates of harvest date can be calculated using relevant heat sums and long term temperature records, whereas, optimum harvest date is determined by percentage kernel moisture. Limitations of the environment in subtropical regions reduce planting time available, hence cultivars with varying heat unit requirements facilitate harvest scheduling.
