THE ACCUMULATIVE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON CHINESE CABBAGE

Abstract:
The accumulative effect of temperature on bolting of Chinese cabbage was studied. Both the cultivar and raising temperature as well as their interaction had a significant effect on the time of visible flowers (from sowing and from flower initiation). The long headed cultivar 'Monument' took a longer time from flower initiation to visible flowers, but no marketable heads were harvested. Under a higher temperature, heads of the shorter headed cultivar, 'Kasumi No.2' had shorter stalks with no visible flowers, but the harvesting time was not prolonged, thus the vegetative growth was inhibited at the earlier stage of flowering. Under higher temperature, the accumulative sum of higher temperature (above 18°C and 20°C from sowing to the flower initiation) was higher than under lower temperature, but the accumulative sum of cold (below 13°C or 15°C) was lower, possibly because the higher day temperature with lower night temperature was quantitatively more efficient in anti-vernalization than the more constant higher temperature.
