RESPONSES OF THREE CUT FLOWER SELECTIONS OF LISIANTHUS (EUSTOMA GRANDIFLORUM) TO SPACING, PRUNING AND NITROGEN APPLICATION RATE UNDER PLASTIC TUNNEL PROTECTION

Abstract:
Three Japanese selections were grown in two experiments under plastic tunnel protection. Spacing at 100 mm in the row (50 plants/m2) increased total stem yield compared with 200 mm (25 plants/m2) but did not markedly influence the proportion of first quality stems. Pinching at 6 nodes did not significantly alter the overall yield of stems or their quality except to increase the proportion of second grade stems at the widest spacing. Nitrogen application rates of 2, 4 or 8 g/m2 gave no significant total yield responses. The lower N rates however resulted in a significant reduction in flower production per stem in a purple-flowered selection only. There were marked differences between selections in total stem yield, earliness and quality.
