ISHS Acta Horticulturae 246: International Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Ornamentals in Mild Winter Climates

PRODUCTION RESULTS OF THE CARNATION CULTIVATED IN A COLD GREENHOUSE

Authors:   V. Lipari, D. Romano
Abstract:
The quantitative and qualitative response of the carnation crop to the conditions of protected cultivations in mediterranean areas was studied.

Data collected in trials carried out with 20 cultivars showed that in these conditions the distribution of the yield over time is very irregular; the higher flower number was achieved during the autumn and late spring, the lower one in the winter months. However the production picked in these months showed the better qualitative characteristics, particularly as concerns the weight of flowers and the length of stems.

In the final analysis, the results represent a reference point for programming the production which may be achieved in cold greenhouse.
